Being an authority on nude beaches is not without it's perils. You probably saw Dr. George R. Harker on TV in 1991 talking about losing his job as a university professor because he studied nude beaches and had been an expert witness in a number of significant cases. Published in 1993 his book He Wouldn't Drink the Hemlock: The Firing of Dr. Leisure is a classic. In it he reveals how those in power can bend the rules to discharge a person they don't like. It is apparent to the reader that if it can happen to Dr. Harker it can happen to any of us. The book also gives insight into the politics of nude beaches with particular emphasis on Little Beach, Maui, Hawaii. Dr. Harker was also a key player in the Rochester, New York case and his involvement is explained. A must read for the nude beach enthusiast, the recreation student or professional interested in the social dynamics of nude recreation. Available from Amazon.com. Click here to order hard cover now. Rooster Rock State park in Oregon (near Portland) was one of the first state parks to officially acknowledge nude use. In the process they developed a sign which they used to advise park users of the use. It reads ATTENTION BEYOND THIS POINT YOU MAY ENCOUNTER NUDE SUNBATHERS. That sign or slight variations have been used by the National Park Service and other agencies to designate the boundary of clothing optional areas.
